The first "rule" of wearing double denim is to avoid wearing matching denim shades which will, interestingly enough, make your outfit clash. Instead, wear two completely different shades of denim - for example, black or very dark blue denim trousers, along with a light blue denim button up shirt or denim jacket. You can, of course, always switch the shades of denim and wear very dark on top and light on bottom; just ensure there is some contrast.
If you really want to match in some way on top and bottom, try wearing denim trousers and a denim vest to match - but make sure the shirt underneath the vest contrasts the denim completely. As for any matching double denim you've seen on the runways, just remember that some people - including runway models - might be able to pull the look off; but head to toe matching denim won't be too flattering on most people.
Another way to wear double denim is to accessorise in order to "break up" the denim look. For instance, add a thick leather belt to your denim outfit, which will break up the colours and textures of the denim and avoid making you look like you're wearing a denim jumpsuit. It's also smart to layer with your denim, throwing in non-denim items like graphic t-shirts or camisoles.
